Training
HeliNorth’s flight training takes place from our base at the very picturesque Lookout Hill on the southern edge of Whangarei. Operating from a private property enables us to eliminate a lot of landing fees. Due to our close proximity to the aerodrome we are able to expose our students to circuit procedures without having to travel any great distance.

Whangarei airfield is uncontrolled meaning you get minimum delays. It is however used by Air New Zealand and other commercial operators on a regular basis and you therefore gain the experience of a real airfield flying environment. Within the same close proximity we have a designated low flying area, both native and exotic forests, farmland, coastal beaches, rocky outcrops and mountainous terrain. All these are used in your training for experience and fun.

Our local training takes place in Class ‘G’ (uncontrolled) airspace, allowing us the freedom to go almost anywhere in the beautiful Northland region without the need to obtain permission. Imagine exploring the Bay of Islands, native and exotic bush areas, scenic coastline and pristine beaches.

We have great heli-fishing nearby and luxurious lodges for overnight escapes should you crave a little pampering or time alone. Take the opportunity during your training to use the helicopter in a fun way and let us show you what helicopters can really do.

We regularly take our students into controlled airspace around Auckland and further afield. This includes flight through military airspace around Whenuapai and builds your confidence to a level where travel to controlled airspace anywhere in New Zealand or overseas isn’t a drama.

Maybe you would like to fly yourself and a friend on a tour around the country. Once you have your PPL this can be arranged and the flying time can be credited towards your CPL cross-country requirements.

Our training facility is here for you! Treat it like home; feel free to make use of all the facilities we have to offer. If you ever have any concerns, questions or need advice on any matter, one of us will always be at hand to help and sort you out.

First Solo

Under normal circumstances students can expect to complete their first solo flight after approximately 20 hours of dual instruction. Your instructor will be looking to ensure that you have demonstrated consistent and safe practices in various aspects of flying the helicopter before your solo flight will be approved. Obviously we won’t send you on a solo flight before you are ready.

Pre-requisites for Solo Flights

Before any student can be sent on their first solo flight they must hold at the very least, a current New Zealand Class 2 Medical Certificate. We would also like you to have achieved passes in Flight Radio, Human Factors and Aviation Law before your first solo flight.

For cross country flights before you have a PPL you must hold current written examination credits for a Private Pilots Licence in all PPL subjects.
